Changes to Drum Specifications

Posted

As drum sizes and shapes change, it’s important to make sure that your drum handling equipment can safely accommodate new models.

A range of different drums for industrial material handling on the STS warehouse floor.

Industrial drums come in many different shapes, sizes and materials. Traditionally 200 litres (55 US gallons) was the standard drum capacity; nowadays drums range from 10-litre all the way up to 220-litre models. Manufacturers of drums are always creating new designs to maximise transport efficiency and usability.

When it comes to manual handling, manufacturers of equipment are rarely consulted on how drums will be handled once in use.  Here at STS we carry out extensive research into drums so that the drum lifting equipment we produce stands at the forefront of the manual handling industry.

L-ring plastic drums (tight-head)

One example is the L-ring (tight-head) plastic drum. Traditionally these drums were provided in a 200-litre specification. In recent times a 220-litre model variant, which is taller than the smaller drum, has become more popular. As such, you might need to assess older drum-handling equipment to make sure it can handle both 200- and 220-litre drums safely and within the UK Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR).

If you’re unsure about the drums your company uses and how they should be handled, we’re here to help. Please get in touch – you can send us pictures and dimensions, which allow us to quickly assess your drums and provide guidance on any handling equipment you might require.
