Versatility
It is important that you buy a drum rotator that is versatile so that it can lift and tip all types of drums and barrels. If you buy a drum rotator that can only pick up and rotate steel 200 litre drums that may be fine now but in years to come you may need to work with and dispense other sizes or types of drums or barrels. Our advice would be to buy a versatile drum rotator that will be suitable for handling and tipping any container that you have. 10 years ago companies mainly needed to lift and tip 45 gallon steel drums but now things are changing. Drums are being supplied to companies from all around the world. Raw material is often bought per kilo and you have to handle whatever container it is supplied in. We have extensive experience in testing drums and barrels for integrity. We have our own in-house test facility where customers send drums for evaluation.

Safety for all drum types
All STS drum rotators have safety features that support the vessel to ensure that it never falls from the rotator head. We see lots of drum rotators and tippers on the market that are of a very old design and are only suitable for handling 200 litre steel drums. People often think they can lift 200 litre plastic drums with these units because they fit into the rotator head. This is because the diameter of the steel and plastic drum is the same. The problem is that the plastic drum does not have any rolling hoop to stop the drum slipping out of the clamping band. STS drum rotators use an adjustable clamping band and an adjustable rim clamp. These two unique features allow our drum rotator to pick up plastic and steel containers of any type or size from 50 litres (10 gallon) to 200 litres (45 gallon). Even the egg-shaped mouser drums are no problem.

Rotation, power options
When selecting a drum rotator it is important to consider how many barrels per day you want to lift and tip. Our standard DRU01 Drum Rotator has a double gearbox that is used to tip the load. The double gearbox ensures that it is easy to rotate, but if you needed to tip lots of barrels you may want a power rotation model. These use an electric or air powered rotation system. The more power functions you have on a unit the more people like to use them.
The electric rotation model is a DRE01 Drum Rotator. A fully programmable electronic control unit controls the rotation. It has lots of built-in safety features. We can program in the rotational speed and force. The control can be a forward and reverse throttle on top of the back panel. The unit has a soft start and stop operation. This type is generally used when the operator does not need to see the dispensing of the drum. Most customers have a pendant controller so that they can control the rotation of the drum whilst being able to see the contents pouring out. The pendant controller has drum lift: up and down; drum rotation: forward and backwards; and an emergency stop button. The pendant controller is also useful if you have our telescopic drum rotator. The pendant controller can be supplied in any length.

Manual & Power Lift Options
Sometimes customers want a manual hydraulic drum rotator to lift and tip a load at 1200mm. This is ok if you only want to dispense one drum or barrel per day. To stay within the Manual Handling Regulations regarding operator input each pump of the hydraulic handle requires an operator input of 16 kg. One pump of the handle will only raise the drum 19mm. If you want to raise the drum up to 1200mm it will take 63 pumps of the handle.
This is why we like to understand what you need to do, to advise you of the best option. The most popular model is the STS STE01-DRU01. This is a battery hydraulic lift drum rotator. The unit is capable of lifting over 100 drums on a single charge. The battery is sealed for life and the unit is designed to be very low maintenance.
If you have a Zoned area we offer our STP01-DRU01-Ex drum rotator. This unit has a pneumatic hydraulic pump that is used to power the lift. The pump is very quiet and efficient. The pump runs on clean, dry air so there is no need for in line oilers like the old type vein pumps. If the air line is disconnected whilst the drum is lifted the drum will stay where it is because the system is hydraulically locked.
